Basford United 0-2 Warrington Town (Northern Premier League) 19.09.20
Basford United’s league campaign started with a 2-0 loss at home to Warrington Town. Goals from Jack Dunn and Bohan Dixon put the visitors into a two-goal lead at the break.
The second half was dominated by the hosts as they looked to find a way back into the game but some resolute defending denied them a way back into the game.
Basford had the better chances in the opening exchanges. Skipper Matt Thornhill sent a well hit free-kick inches past the post before Rev James had an effort blocked. The visitors then grew into the game and looked to create more chances. Charlie Munro sent an effort over the bar before Matthew Regan looked to catch Kieran Preston out with a chip but the Basford number one was equal to the effort and tipped it over the bar.
There was nothing Preston could do about Warrington’s next attack as they took the lead. Dunn did well to create some space on the edge of the area and he placed the ball into the far corner out of the reach of the Basford ‘keeper.
Basford looked to bounce straight back as Rev James saw a deflected effort saved after Alex Howes had beat several players. But they were two down at the break as Dom Roma gave a penalty away. Dixon stepped up to score via the inside of the post in the last action of the half.
The second half started like the first with Basford on the front foot. A succession of corners came either side of James Clifton firing just over the bar. The pressure from Basford continued as they continued to probe the Warrington back line but struggled to find a way to test the visiting ‘keeper. When they did test him, he was more than equal to the effort doing well to keep out substitute Kane Richards.
Richards then saw an effort blocked as fellow substitute James Carvell set him up the area. The winger continued to stand out as he forced Albingson into a good stop as the clock ticked away from Basford with the score at 2-0 come the final whistle.
In other news Jericho Bonner’s goal was not enough as Basford United U21s suffered a 2-1 loss against Milton Keynes College on Saturday morning.
