A feisty encounter in the Gladiators Arena ended in a 2-2 draw as Basford United drew with Matlock Town in an entertaining match in front of a packed socially distanced crowd at the beautiful Causeway Lane ground.
Basford took the leads seven minutes before half time through Kane Richards before Reece Kendall levelled moments before the break. Matt Thornhill then put the visitors in front on 65 only for Matlock to level two minutes later through Liam Hughes.
An indifferent start for United in their three Northern Premier League matches so far with one win, one draw and one defeat, Basford have a weekend off on Saturday as their proposed opponents Hyde United are in FA Cup action.
In the South East Division last night it was spoils shared at Sutton Coldfield as Carlton Town drew 0-0 in the West Midlands. A better nights work for Worksop Town who comfortably beat Wisbech Town 3-0 in Cambridgeshire. Michael Dunn opened the scoring on 34 minutes with Vaughan Redford doubling the Tigers advantage five minutes after the break and Luke Hinsley rounding things off eight minutes before full time.
Worksop currently sit top of the division with two wins from their two games played whilst Carlton lie in eighteenth still to record a win.
In the Northern Counties East League it was a good nights work for AFC Mansfield who thumped Penistone Church 4-1 at the Forest Town Arena.
They had to come from behind though falling 0-1 down a minute after half time, Ross Duggan levelled things up before Josh Wilde gave the Bulls the lead, Duggan made it 3-1 from the spot on 78 and ten minutes later Matthew Sykes rounded things off to give Mansfield their first league win of the season.
In the NCEL First Division it wasn’t such a good night for Retford FC who lost 3-2 at Rossington Main. Gareth Davies gave Retford the lead going into half time before two goals from the home side turned things around. William Tomlinson might have thought he had rescued a point from the spot but a goal three minutes before full time ensured all three points would stay in South Yorkshire.
Finally in the Midland Football League Gresley thumped Selston 6-1 at the Moat. The Sels currently sit bottom of the division having lost all their five matches thus far.
