Local Sides Chasing Vase Dream

Eight teams from Nottinghamshire will take the pitch this weekend with Wembley Stadium as the end goal as the FA Vase enters the second qualifying round of its competition.

There are two all Notts ties involving four East Midlands Counties League teams tomorrow with early runaway league leaders Ollerton Town facing Radford FC who are struggling towards the other end of their bread and butter but this after all is the cup, where anything can happen.

Ollerton have been in fine form since moving from the Northern Counties East League to the East Mids Counties this summer and the reds are top of the table having played five, won five, scoring 22 goals and are still yet to concede in the league.

Radford haven’t had it all their own way with two defeats from three league games but at least come in to the game with a bit of form having beaten Gedling Miners Welfare last time out.

The match will be played at Selhurst Street with a 3pm Kick Off. All fans are welcome.

No strangers to the FA Vase are Rainworth Miners Welfare who memorably reached the twin towers in 1982 where they were beaten by Forest Green Rovers in the Wembley final. The Wrens this weekend take on Gedling Miners Welfare in another all Notts clash that will at least guarantee one of two local clubs into the next round.

Both currently playing in the East Midlands Counties League, Rainworth are currently eighth in the division whilst Gedling lie 15th so a nice distraction from that will ensure a fiery atmosphere at Kirklington Road in another game that kicks off at 3pm with supporters more than welcome to attend.

Two more Nottinghamshire based teams are in FA Vase action from the EMCL on Saturday with both having home ties too. West Bridgford who went well in the competition last season take on Harrowby United who are managed by former Mansfield Town winger Jamie McGhee whilst Sherwood Colliery, unbeaten in the league with four wins from four, take on Aylestone Park who like Harrowby play in the United Counties League First Division.

Finally on Saturday bottom of the table Midland League side Selston travel to Long Eaton United in a tricky looking FA Vase tie whilst on Sunday another all EMCL tie will be played as Belper United take on Kimberley Miners Welfare in a 3pm Kick Off at Christchurch Meadow.
