Nottingham Wildcats are through to the final of the WBBL Trophy after a fabulous 90 points to 75 win over Manchester Mystics at the National Basketball Performance Centre.
The Wildcats have had a tricky time in the league in recent weeks, but came through against strong opposition to take a slot in next weeks final where they’ll play London Lions in Worcester to fight for some silverware in a one-off showpiece.
It is Nottingham’s first time in the final since finishing runners up in 2015 and they did it from coming behind at half time in a terrific contest after two dominant second periods swayed the tie away from the Mystics.
Kenrick Liburd’s side had a five point advantage at the end of the first quarter but Manchester fought back to take a 51-47 half time lead but Nottingham slowly chipped away to gain advantage and an eleven point third period swing helped the Wildcats to a dominant fourth and final which resulted in a comfortable finish to the game and an eventual fifteen point win.
Jasmine Joyner headed the points tally of the Wildcats with 24 as Chelsey Shumpert and Simone Costa scored 19 each. Joyner topped the games rebounds with 15 whilst Shumpert and Costa headed Nottingham’s assists with five each.
A fantastic win for the side will now head Nottingham into an exciting final with Wildcats stalwart Siobhan Prior tweeting after “Because we are EMOTIONAL, Because we are PASSIONATE, Because we embrace our CRAZY, Because that’s what makes us POWERFUL!! That’s why WOMEN do it like we do!!! WATCH US WORK!!”
