It has been a long wait since the premature covid-hit closure of the 2020/21 campaign last Autumn, but there were mixed results for the returning Beeston Hockey Club’s men and women’s first XI’s over the weekend as an ex-Bee stung his old club with the opening goal of the Premier Division season as Old Georgians ran rout over their travelling opponents down in Addlestone, Surrey.
After a busy Summer in Tokyo, Olympian Sam Ward got the first of his two goals to help his side beat the Bees 4-0. The former player of these parts haunting his old club with a ninth minute strike and one in the 44th minute for good measure with James Tindall and Ed Carson also finding the net on a bad day for our boys down south.
Better news though as Beeston Women got off to a winning start to their Premier Division campaign at the Nottingham Hockey Centre against Holcombe.
The Lady Bees came from behind thanks to a Nadia Benallal equaliser and a debut goal for new signing Lucy Millington who dispatched a penalty stroke in helping Beeston to a 2-1 win.
This weekend Beeston’s men host Wimbledon at the University Boulevard on Sunday whilst the Women travel to Surbiton on Saturday for a tricky away tie in London against a seven time league champion that drew their first match of the season against Clifton Robinsons.
