Mansfield Town 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday (Football League Trophy Group 8) 05.10.21
It was agonising defeat for Mansfield in the Papa Johns Trophy, a tenth game without a win made worse after the match heading for a draw, concluded with a 93rd minute winner for League One Sheffield Wednesday.
Just nine changes for the Stags after defeat against Barrow at the weekend but it didn’t take long for the new look eleven of Nigel Clough’s to create an early opportunity as Harry Charsley saw an effort blocked by a defender on three minutes after good work by Law.
In tricky conditions, the wind at Field Mill would have an effect on the game and Stags goalkeeper George Shelvey, on loan from Nottingham Forest was called into action on 14, making a save from a long-range Owls effort before Farrend Rawson blocked from Saido Berahino on the rebound.
On 23 minutes, Corbeanu again tested Shelvey who was equal to the task, before Keaton Ward went close for the home side, heading wide on 26 when he should have done better.
Tyrese Sinclair then spurned the opportunity of the half for Mansfield, after being put through by Danny Johnson he smashed wide of the mark four minutes before the break.
Wednesday made two changes at half time but it was Mansfield who started the better of the two sides in the second half, minutes in, Tyrese Sinclair again going close with a strike held by Wildsmith before another volley that was well saved by the keeper on 54.
Wildsmith then denied Law and after Corbeanu nestled the side netting with the Owls best opportunity, the away side then took the lead when Wing headed home on 64 minutes.
Wednesday however weren’t ahead for long, Sinclair finding Quinn just four minutes later, the Irishman smashing it in the top corner for a leveller. Quinn then went close to a second, firing wide on 77, before Shelvey denied Corbeanu one on one, Wednesday’s Sow having another opportunity on 85, dragging his attempt wide of the posts before deep in injury time, Kamberi scored a late winner for the visitors to inflict more pain on Stags Manager Nigel Clough and his playing staff.
Despite the result it was a good account from Clough’s side who will be disappointed with another game not going their way, a probable much changed team verses Oldham in the league on Saturday will now hope for a bit more luck, and three desperate points for the first time since mid-August.
