Ollerton & Sherwood Through In Cup

It’s been a while since we gave you a roundup of our counties top non-league men’s first teams in action which reminds us, feel free to send in match reports and team news of your club (men or women) to info@nottinghamsport.com and we’ll be happy to use and publicise no matter where in the county you are from.

Let’s start in the Nottinghamshire Senior Cup First Round where it was a pay per view TV screening for Eastwood Community and Sherwood Colliery last night, a Notts FA first, courtesy of online streamer Joymo.

With all the goals coming in the first half, it was Sherwood Colliery who beat their hosts in front of 122 spectators at the Halbrooke Stadium known widely by many as Coronation Park.

Jamie York netted for Sherwood on 23 before Ewan Robson doubled the visitors advantage five minutes before half time. Callum Jones did pull one back for the Red Badgers before the break to ensure a nervy second half, but it was the Northern Counties East League side that went through in a hard fought encounter against their United Counties League opposition.

In an all NCEL First Division derby on Tuesday night, Ollerton Town beat Retford FC 1-0 thanks to a Gavin King penalty for the away side in the 72nd minute to also reach the second round of this year’s Notts Senior Cup, Ollerton off the back of the win are now six games unbeaten.

In the Northern Premier League, you may have seen that Basford United were beaten 3-1 against Buxton on Tuesday night as ex-Nottingham Forest star Jamie Ward scored a brace for Gary Hayward’s team who sit third in the division, United are currently eighth after fourteen games played but well within touching distance of the playoff spots, with 22 points, just three points below fifth spot Whitby Town in that all important place.

Better news for Basford last night, was that their young guns went through in the FA Youth Cup, reaching the first-round proper for the second successive season after a 5-4 penalties win over Halesowen Town.

United went 2-0 up on the night, with goals early on in the second half through Louis Rourke and Jordan Haywood before a late comeback by Halesowen saw the Yeltz score twice in the last ten minutes to take the game to a shootout. Basford eventually edging through on pens with goalkeeper Gianni Musson saving a spot kick and Louis Rourke netting the all-important fifth shot to spark off celebrations in front of the healthy Greenwich Avenue crowd.

No game for Carlton Town who sit third in the NPL Midlands Division right now but Worksop Town were in action in the East Division on Tuesday evening and disappointed in a 3-0 home defeat to Dunston.

The Tigers currently sit seventh in the table after ten games played with fifteen points and take on Stocksbridge Park Steels at the weekend who are a place above them in sixth.

In the Notts Senior League last night, a Calum Law hat-trick helped Southwell City to a 4-0 win at Ravenshead with Thomas Jackson netting the final goal of the game.

Finally to round up some Division One action in the United Counties League. Hucknall Town beat Graham Street Prims 2-1 in Derby with goals for the yellows from Aaron Short and Craig Westcarr.
