Guildford Flames 3-2 Nottingham Panthers (Challenge Cup Quarter Final 2nd Leg) 19.01.22
The Nottingham Panthers advanced to the Semi-Finals of the Premier Sports Challenge Cup with a 6-5 aggregate win over the Flames on Wednesday night.
Kevin Carr started in goal for the Panthers opposite Kevin Lindskoug for the Flames.
After a 4-2 loss in Nottingham last week, Guildford got themselves back into the tie when they pulled ahead on the night in Surrey and to within a goal behind on aggregate through Owen Griffiths (13.20) to offer the Panthers a scare but less than a minute later, J.C. Brassard (14.07) walked the blue line before skating down between the face-off circles to rip a shot past the Flames’ netminder to tie things on the night and restore the Panthers’ two-goal on aggregate.
A goalless second period gave way to a tense third where Nottingham would eventually hold strong to edge through.
Jeremy Welsh (52.34) looked like he’d sealed things when he forced home a rebound off the back boards but late goals from Jordan Cownie (53.16) & Brett Ferguson (59.15) gave Guildford life as they went back to within one.
A late roughing penalty to Jamal Watson (59.37) sealed the Flames’ fate however as the Panthers’ powerplay unit saw out the final 23 seconds without any issues.
The Panthers’ 6-5 aggregate win now means they will take on the Belfast Giants in a one-legged Semi-Final in February.
