Perfect Send Off For Local Legend
The funeral of commentating legend Colin Slater took place in Nottingham today with a large number of Notts County supporters gathered at Meadow Lane to pay their respects to a man that in fifty years of commentary largely with the BBC, covered around 3,000 matches, mostly for the Magpies.
The hearse left the famous old stadium where supporters would provide a guard of honour before moving on to the cities St Mary’s Church in the Lace Market for the afternoon’s service which was also screened for fans via YouTube.
The club plan a celebration of Colin Slater’s life against Grimsby Town on Saturday after their original plans were delayed following the home match with Barnet last week being postponed.
Friends, family, ex-players and staff of Notts County and colleagues of the BBC attended the funeral lead by Reverend Tom Gillum who stated “Colin had this amazing capacity for friendship”.
He followed “There were a lot of people who felt really close to him and it will be a sad occasion because he was so loveable.”
The Notts County history website stated on Twitter “The years of memories, the thousands of commentaries, through the ups & the downs we thank you Uncle Colin.”
Whilst Robin Chipperfield, a former BBC Commentator himself, who worked with Colin, and covered mostly Nottingham Forest matches from across the river, now based in Australia, stated “My thoughts are with friends and former colleagues today, as they gather for the legendary Colin Slater’s funeral.”
“I know they, Notts County and Nottingham more widely, will give him the send-off that he deserves.”
He certainly got that thanks to all those well wishers who did a man who did this city so proud, and the memories will continue against Grimsby Town, and celebrated forever and beyond by those who listened to his iconic matchday voice.
Rest in peace Colin, you may have been born in West Yorkshire, but you were certainly, one of our own. Nottingham will be forever indebted for the world class service you always with a smile, provided.
