Notts Slip Up In Promotion Race

Chesterfield 3-1 Notts County (National League) 01.03.22

Notts County had their automatic promotion dreams dampened this past Tuesday evening, as the Magpies were defeated 3-1 by fellow promotion chasing Chesterfield.

It was Notts who had the first real opportunity to take the lead. The returning Cal Roberts produced his typical trickery to set free Jayden Richardson, who whipped the ball up and beyond the defenders in blue towards the head of Elisha Sam. The in-form forward’s goal bound header looked to be entering the bottom left corner before shot-stopper Scott Loach pounced upon the ball on the goal line to keep the score level.

Chesterfield responded with an opportunity of their own. Jeff King’s wide free kick was delivered perfectly to the back post where Jamie Grimes awaited. The centre-half leaped highest to turn the ball towards goal but unfortunately for the home faithful, the header continued to rise over the bar.

Just five minutes before the interval, the visitors took the lead. The unplayable Elisha Sam picked up the ball on the left-hand side and ventured towards the Chesterfield penalty area. With defenders standing off, the Belgian forward struck a powerful, curled effort high and into the far top corner of Loach’s goal to give his side a hard-earnt advantage.

The second half began, and it was a heavily dominant beginning from the hosts which was rewarded rapidly by an equalising goal. Former Notts loanee Calvin Miller’s sublime delivery into the Magpies’ penalty area was met by the head of Laurence Maguire, whose powerful header was too hot to handle for Vitezslav Jaros levelling the score at one each.

Almost instantly after levelling, the home side nearly found themselves behind yet again. A surging run forward from Cal Roberts resulted in the winger playing through Ruben Rodrigues. The Portuguese midfielder looked destined to score but in his way was Scott Loach, who bravely dived in the way of a strong, low effort to keep his side on level terms.

The Magpies were left to woe the waisted opportunity as just four minutes from time, Chesterfield took the lead. The home side attacked with force and after a succession of countless, dangerous attacks a Jeff King cross was met at the back post again by Laurence Maguire, who bundled the ball home for his second of the evening.

Just as the game became bad for the Magpies, it resulted a whole lot worse two minutes after falling behind. Liam Mandeville was hurled over in the penalty area by a retrieving Notts defender, and the referee awarded a penalty. To win the game, up stepped the reliable Akwasi Asante who fired hard into the middle of the goal to confirm the important three points for Paul Cook’s side.

Notts had an opportunity to get one back before the final whistle, but Kyle Cameron’s header was wonderfully saved by Loach. This was about as good as it got for Notts in their attempts of a heroic recovery of the game as the referee’s whistle sounded for the end of the game. It finished Chesterfield 3-1 Notts County.
