Non-League Roundup: Ollerton Hit Five

It was lights out twice for Retford FC as they were not only beaten by Ollerton Town in their local derby Northern Counties East League Division One match at the Fast Frame, but they also had to endure a floodlight failure which halted proceedings somewhat, the Choughs might have wished when lights went out midway through the games first half, that they never had to come back out to complete the remainder of the game.

It was Jacques Etia who put the home side one up after just fourteen minutes when Grady flicked on for Luke Francis to direct the ball into the wingers’ path to fire home. Moments later Francis headed against the bar from a long throw in before a teasing corner by Greaves was tipped over from underneath his bar by Kennedy.

Shortly after the 20-minute mark the lights were out however, those who know Ollerton will know that sometimes these temperamental issues with floodlights come and go… It wouldn’t be non-league football without these awkward misdemeanours.

Back out, after a short delay, Ollerton were back on top and quickest from the blocks, on 27 it was 2-0 as former Red Gaz Davies headed into his own net against his old club.

George Slack then made it three, reacting quickest after having an initial headed attempt saved off the line, he forced home the rebound to give the hosts a comfortable half time lead. The only concern for Ollerton, would the floodlights last the remainder?

Sure they did, and ahead of the hour it was four. Lewis Murr curling home a left footed free kick from range before George Slack grabbed a second, teeing himself up for a wonderful volley to crown a five star performance for the home side.

The win lifts Ollerton to eleventh, a second win in succession after scoring five at the weekend against Armthorpe.

Retford FC stay sixth in the table but now seven points below the playoff zone.

Elsewhere in the NCEL First Division midweek, Rainworth Miners Welfare were beaten 2-1 at North Ferriby with George Simpson grabbing a late consolation from the spot, whilst bottom of the table Teversal drew 0-0 with Swallownest.

In the Premier Division on Tuesday night, Sherwood Colliery beat Silsden 2-1 thanks to goals from Gareth Curtis and Lewis Belgrave, the Wood are now fourth in the table and unbeaten in three.

In the United Counties League Premier Division North on Wednesday Newark were beaten 3-2 at Heanor Town in a thriller that saw a late winner for the home side.

Newark stay fifteenth in the table a place above Selston who were beaten on Tuesday night 2-1 at Heather St Johns.

In the UCL First Division, Hucknall Town were beaten 3-0 at home to Barrow on Wednesday whilst Dunkirk beat Harrowby 3-1 and Clifton beat Saffron Dynamo 2-1 with good away wins for the counties teams on Tuesday night.

Aaron Large twice netted for Dunkirk with Max Taylor completing the Boatmen’s scoring at Harrowby, whilst Kieran Cummings and Anthony Banks were on target for the All Whites in Leicestershire.
