Basford United 1-5 Notts County (Friendly) 05.07.22
Notts County started their pre-season friendly campaign with an emphatic win over Basford United at Greenwich Avenue last night.
The Magpies gave a first start to new signing Sam Austin whilst Geraldo Bajrami, Macaulay Langstaff and Cedwyn Scott all came off the bench at half time.
Basford included a couple of former Magpies in Declan Dunn and Brad McGowan with former Forest midfielder Matt Thornhill captaining the hosts in front of a healthy crowd over 1,500.
It was actually Basford who took the lead on the night, a neat interchange of football ending with former Mansfield Town striker Anthony Dwyer tapping home from close range on 14 but half an hour into the game Notts were level when Ruben Rodrigues scrambled home from close range.
Three minutes from the Magpies leveller it was 2-1 to the National League side as Mitchell Tait put into his own net and at the break, Notts Head Coach Luke Williams made eleven changes, including a slot for trialist Jackson Smith in between the sticks.
On 49 Preston saved from Langstaff to deny the new signing from Gateshead a first Notts goal before United had the ball in the back of the net on 52, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.
Langstaff however wasn’t to be denied for long, on 62, Aaron Nemane raced down the wing to cut back with the ball falling to the striker via Rodrigues, to net his first of hopefully many more to come. United made a goalkeeping change late on to award Academy starlet Gianni Musson an opportunity to shine but his first duties included picking the ball out of the back of the net after a bad attempted punch as Kyle Cameron looped home a header from a corner on 78.
On 82 minutes Cameron then turned provider for Cedwyn Scott who scored his first for the Magpies to round off a comfortable victory, Head Coach Luke Williams stating “it was a shaky start, disappointed to concede from the first attempt by the opposition but it was good overall and pleased to see the boys score some goals, some good stuff we’ve worked on in training and a lot of stuff we need to sort out”.
Notts next face Leicester City in a behind closed doors friendly on Saturday whilst Basford who yesterday signed Tanzanian international Ben Starkie, will face Nottingham Forest U23’s on Friday night, again at Greenwich Avenue (7:30pm kick off).
