Magpies Shine In Leicester Win

After a 5-1 thumping of Basford United in midweek, Notts County continued their fine start to pre-season on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Leicester City in a game played behind closed doors at the Foxes state of the art training complex in Seagrave.

In glorious sunshine, Head Coach Luke Williams started with a strong team with five of those starting at Greenwich Avenue against Basford, picked to play Leicester from the off, the Premier League side including Hamza Choudhury, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Patson Daka amongst their starters.

It was Harvey Barnes who gave Brendan Rogers team of stars the lead after half an hour but Notts played some slick stuff against Leicester, four levels above the Magpies in the football pyramid, and it was Kairo Mitchell who levelled before half time from a corner, after a mistake by Iversen in the Foxes goal.

With many changes made on a sweltering day, it was a new signing in Aiden Baldwin who bagged a late winner on 78. Cal Roberts swinging in a free kick for the former MK Dons defender to head home unmarked, and give Notts an unlikely win and second of the summer.

Also enjoying the Saturday sunshine, Mansfield Town emphatically dusted off Retford United with a 6-0 win at Cannon Park.

The Stags who announced the signing of striker Wil Swann on loan from Nottingham Forest just hours before kick-off who also started the match in the Mansfield attack, took the lead through Lucas Akins on ten minutes before Jordan Bowery doubled the visiting football league sides advantage on 26.

Swan then provided James Gale with a third before Hiram Boateng played in Stephen Quinn to make it four and that wasn’t it, Jordan Bowery grabbed another to make it five, all before the break.

With plenty of changes made in the second half, Retford improved somewhat but on 51 minutes it was six for the Stags as Rhys Oates controlled an Ollie Clarke assist to finish off in style. The Badgers however dug deep for the final 39 minutes of the game and there were no more Mansfield goals.

Finally on Friday night in the south of Spain, Nottingham Forest opened up their pre-season campaign with a defeat against Coventry City.
