Mansfield Town 3-0 Sheffield United (Friendly) 19.07.22
Mansfield Town continued with their fine form in pre-season with a convincing friendly win over Championship side Sheffield United at the One Call Stadium last night.
Two goals for midfielder Hirem Boateng. who looks to have settled into life as a Stag since his recent move from MK Dons and one for Rhys Oates giving Nigel Clough something to smile about as he enjoys victory over a club he previously managed.
A tight first half against a strong United side which included the likes of Ben Osborn, Rhian Brewster, Sander Berge and new defensive signing, formerly of Nottingham Forest, Anel Ahmedhodzic, had another Red Academy graduate, Riley Harbottle on loan at Mansfield, throw his body on the line to stop Berge opening the scoring on three minutes.
On 18, Kelland Gordon crossed dangerously low across the Blades box, narrowly avoiding the en-rushing strikers before ten minutes later, Christy Pym at the other end saved from Ndiaye who shot low to the goalkeepers left.
The second half included a number of changes for both sides but it was a player who started the game, Hirem Boateng who opened the scoring on 65 after young striker James Gale beat the offside trap to square to the former Crystal Palace man who slotted home from six yards out.
Seven minutes later, Gale turned provider again as he drilled low for Rhys Oates to do what he does best. The former Hartlepool man firing home to double the home sides advantage.
And with six minutes remaining, Boateng grabbed his second and a third for Mansfield, turning on the edge of the area to curl beautifully past Wes Foderingham.
After the match, Manager Nigel Clough stated of his sides performance that he was “very pleased with ten days to go until the end of the season, it was an excellent workout first of all, and we didn’t pick up any injuries which was a good thing to come out of it, a good clean sheet, we scored three very good goals and the quality of the opposition , the way they started the game and keeping the ball, but we hung on in there, and when we got the ball, I thought we done ok with it”.
Mansfield, who are unbeaten so far in pre-season, are next in action with a friendly at Oldham Athletic on Saturday (3pm Kick Off).
