Stags Fall Short At Sutton

Sutton United 2-1 Mansfield Town (EFL League Two) 27.08.22

Mansfield Town were beaten by Sutton United as Nigel Clough’s men lose their third match of the campaign during a frustrating afternoon in the southeast.

The Stags survived an early scare when Christy Pym saved from Wilson on five minutes to turn things around and dictate the early pace but without creating any chances of note, on 26 minutes it was the home side who went closest again, Beautyman hitting a post following a Sutton corner into the box.

As the sun belted down towards a stalemate first 45, the hosts got their breakthrough a minute before the half time interval as Neufville danced through to shoot low and hard into the corner of the Mansfield net.

That gave Nigel Clough a different kind of team-talk at half time and the away side came out strong in the early stages of the second period. Hartigan’s corner met by Hawkins who headed over on 52 before McLaughlin shot inches wide after good work by Will Swan.

Mansfield made changes to their make-up with five players brought on to shake things up and immediately after a treble substitution on 75 minutes, Oliver Hawkins connected with a free kick to power in a leveller with a trademark bullet header which would set up a frantic last fifteen.

It was Sutton however during those closing stages who would go on to take glory, themselves making a treble switch before two minutes later, and with only eight minutes left before time, Tope Fadahunsi with his first touch since entering the field of play, came up with a bundled winner inside a crowded penalty area.

Mansfield are still looking for their first away points of the season, the Stags currently sitting eighth in the table have won all their three league matches at home whilst losing all three away, next up is the EFL Trophy group match at Field Mill against Manchester City under 21’s on Tuesday, before the Stags hope to finally get the monkey off their back as they travel to Doncaster on Saturday in search of much-needed away points.
