It’s been a good week for Basford United who on Thursday night saw their U18s through in the first qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup with a 3-0 win at Deeping Rangers to set up a local derby tie at Long Eaton United later this month.
On Saturday, following a 1-0 win at Coalville Town in the Southern League Central on Bank Holiday Monday gone, the Amber’s beat Romulus 5-0 in the FA Cup first qualifying round, Mark Clifford’s first team now four unbeaten in all competitions whilst the defence, marshalled in goal by the impressive Kieran Preston, are yet to concede in over 360 minutes.
At Greenwich Avenue, against their West Midland based opponents, they were certainly up for the cup, with a crowd of 207 watching on, after a competitive first quarter of the game, it was Anthony Dwyer who opened the scoring on 28 from a short played Josh Barnes free kick.
A Romulus red card within two minutes of the first goal left the visitors down to ten and from the resulting set play, Dwyer curled home a second in style, crashing in off the crossbar another United net-bulger to his growing collection.
Tyreace Palmer made it three, five minutes into the second half, before Gregg Smith netted with his first touch after coming on as a substitute. Dwyer then wrapping things up with a minute to play, smashing home from close range after Starkie broke away.
Elsewhere in the FA Cup, it was also a five star performance for Worksop Town who progressed after thumping Worcester Raiders 5-0.
Two goals each from Alex Starchenko and Liam Hughes with Luke Hall also netting in a superb display by Craig Parry’s men.
But unfortunately this particular road to Wembley, has ended for Kimberley Miners Welfare who were beaten 3-1 at Atherstone. James Shaw netting the visitors goal, who bow out following their best ever display in the competition, the Welfare are back in cup action on Tuesday night, as they take on Blidworth at the Stag Ground, in the United Counties League Cup, Kimberley are also still in the FA Vase where they’ll face Melton Town on Saturday 24th September in North Leicestershire.
