Basford Pay The Pen As Notts Go Through

Basford United were beaten in their Monday night football match at Redditch whilst Notts County Academy came through in their County Cup tie against West Bridgford last night.

In the Southern League Central, Basford were back in action just 48 hours after a 2-2 draw at the weekend when Mark Clifford’s men conceded a penalty late on against St Ives to ruin what was an otherwise good away performance at fellow playoff contenders.

And United paid the penalty again in the West Midlands, as Redditch United took the lead from the spot after twenty minutes at the TRICO Stadium, although a first goal in amber for Seth Patrick levelled things up at the break, another penalty conceded with fifteen minutes remaining, was again converted, Reece Flanagan scoring both the home sides goals.

Basford are now seventh in the Southern League Central Division with 18 points from 12 games played, four points behind fifth placed Leiston in the last play off spot, a massive fourteen points behind leaders of the division Tamworth.

In the County Cup, Notts County Academy reached the quarter finals with a win at West Bridgford FC.

The home side announced the game on Twitter as ‘the oldest professional club in the world against the biggest club (we think).’ West Bridgford is said to be one of the biggest amateur set ups in the country with its huge number of junior boy and girls teams.

And the home side didn’t look out of place either, in front of a whopping crowd of 317 at Regatta Way, they were edged by the Magpies 2-1, with French striker Abou Sylla giving the home side the lead, but two second half goals managed to turn things around for Notts, Brad McGregor and Charlie Gill sending the Magpies through to the last eight.
