Two Way Battle In Owzat Premier

The Owzat Nottinghamshire Premier League Premier currently has a two-way battle between Kimberley Institute CC, and defending champions, Cavaliers & Carrington CC, however, an eye does need to be cast over third place Cuckney CC, and their opening batsman, Nicholas Keast, more if his last two outings are anything to go by.

Having racked up 175 runs combined, in earlier games against Plumtree CC (93 n/o), and Hucknall CC (82), Keast’s former dipped a little in the next three, hitting just 25 against Kimberley, and 12 against Papplewick & Linby CC, the Cuckney batsman was dismissed for just one in their ECB Club Championship win over Langtons CC (from Market Harborough).

Then came his last two outings, including this past weekend’s 131 run success over visitors Radcliffe-on-Trent CC, Keast racking up two, century-plus innings, totalling an impressive, 336 runs; against Attenbrough CC (10 June), Cuckney would lose by six wickets, despite a 161 n/o from the visiting opener.

This was quickly followed this past Saturday (17 June) against Radcliffe, Keast bettering the previous weeks’ tally to smash 171 n/o en-route to victory, this being coupled with 79 from William Butler, and 64 for Thomas Ullyott, before Joseph Worrall took 5-56 when restricting the visitors to 233, William Masojada’s unbeaten 101 n/o very much in vein – for the record, Keat’s return of 336, he’s faced just 303 balls – they next face Attenborough in the ECB Club (Sunday 18), followed by a trip to mid-table Wollaton CC.

As for the top of the Premier, Kimberley (66pts) lead Cavaliers (60pts) by just six points, after ten games, this past Saturday seeing the leaders defeat visitors West Bridgfordians CC by 161 runs, Kimbo posting 298/7 before skittling their visitors for 137.

Akhil Patel helped himself to 136 (from 138 balls), and Dominic Brown 76 (from 82), with Alex King one of just three visitors to hit double figures, he knocking 64 runs, the win for the leaders coming on the back of an 89-run success away to Wollaton the previous week as Ximus Du Plooy smashed 117 (from 103) in an innings of 290, the hosts being bowled for 201.

Defending champions, Cavs, kept up the pace at the top when they defeated visitors Wollaton by 110 runs, welcome relief after consecutive losses against Radcliffe-on-Trent, and a T20 defeat to Cuckney.

Against Wollaton, Cavs posted 276/9 and both Umar Amin, 102, and Viken Kedariya, 105, posted centuries, what was more surprising was that only two other batsmen made double figures – it mattered not though as the visitors were all-out for 166, Muhammad Imran following up his three wickets, with a top-scoring 41, Johan Cronje (33), and Paul McMahon (35) also batting well before both were out, lbw, by Farhan Ahmed.

With Cuckney sitting in third, Papplewick are fourth, on 42pts, having picked up consecutive victories against bottom club Mansfield Hosiery Mills CC (120 runs) and Clifton Village CC (8 wickets); Louis Bhabra 54, and Ben Trevor-Jones 46, top-scored in the former,  with Eamonn Vines 69 n/o, Callum McKenzie 67, and Freddie McCann 50 n/o, in the latter.

Including Welbeck’s win at Notts Unity, there was only one win of the six games played, achieved at home, that being Thoresby CC’s two wicket success against visitors Cuckney IIs, the visitors having posted 235/8 as Matthew Beer and Will Bircumshaw both knocked half centuries before Kieran Walker’s 62 for Thoresby helped them to 237/8, with a handful of balls to spare, to take the win.
