Cup Progress For Colls & Carlton

Carlton Town and Sherwood Colliery both succeeded in their home, FA Cup Preliminary Round ties at the weekend, the former defeating visitors Maltby Main, whilst the latter stunned visiting Grantham Town.

Musa Ndaw-Jawarra netted a late brace for Carlton to finally break down a stubborn Maltby side, the Notts hosts having taken an early lead through Romello Nangle; meanwhile, at Sherwood, the hosts took a two-goal interval lead en-route to shocking their visitors in front of more than 200 spectators.

Sherwood found themselves two goals to the good after half an hour following goals from Brad Wells, and Kieran Knight, within the space of ten minutes midway through the half, a lead in which they took into the interval.

Substitute James Matthews (following a late review) then added a third as the hosts looked to put the result to bed in the closing stages, it coming after Town had rattled Sheppard’s cross-bar through Akeel; the visitors did pull a goal back to make for a nervy close for the hosts, through Rodrigo Goncalves, but the Notts club held on for a big win, and a place in the hat for the next round.

Unfortunately for their region there was exits from the world famous knockout competition for both Eastwood CFC, 2-1 away to Anstey Nomads, Tyler Blake netting late in the first half, and Newark & Sherwood United, who suffered a 4-0 loss at home to Harborough Town, Connor Kennedy and Silvano Obeng bagging braces for the victors.

In league action, Worksop Town were held to a goalless draw when home to Lancaster City, and Basford United fell to a 2-1 loss away to Guiseley, in the Northern Premier League Premier Division; Retford United kept up their unbeaten start (won three, drawn two) to life back in the Northern Counties East Division One, despite being held to a 2-2 draw away to Horbury Town as Owen Fieldsend and Alister Haydock both netted, whilst Retford lost 2-0 at home to Wombwell Town.

In the United Counties League Premier North goals from Kaylum Mitchell early in the first half, and Surafel Tefera midway through the second, helped AFC Mansfield to a 2-1 win away to Loughborough Students, whilst Kimberley Miners Welfare fell to a 2-0 loss on the road at Deeping Rangers.

As for the UCL Division One, two Notts clubs bagged five in wins, and three hit four apiece, as goals scored were in maximum effect; Lewis Bingham and Gareth Curtis both bagged doubles as Clipstone eased to a 5-1 win at Blackstones, and Jack Thatcher fired a four-goal salvo as Dunkirk put visiting Leicester St. Andrews to the sword with the same result.

Notching four times was Radford, who defeated visitors Asfordby 4-1. Paul Johnson with a hat-trick, Courtney Hastings notched twice as Gedling Miners Welfare defeated visiting Holwell Sports 4-2, and Southwell City won by the same score when at Saffron Dynamo, Christopher Okoye scoring twice.

Callum Fletcher scored for Rainworth Miners Welfare as they lost 3-1 at home to Birstall United, West Bridgford and Selston shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw, and the game between Newark Town and Clifton All Whites was abandoned early in the second half, the visitors leading at the time.

Tom Suter scored twice as Mansfield Hosiery Mills shared a high-scoring, 3-3 draw, away to Derby Singh Brothers in the Central Midlands League Premier South, and Linby Colliery Welfare won by the same score when home to Cromford & Wirksworth thanks to goals from Dylan Walker (2) and a Sanousi Ibrahim penalty, the hosts finding themselves two to the good inside the opening ten.

Meanwhile, in the other CML South match, Arnold Town went down 3-0 when on the road at Graham Street Prims, and in the Nottinghamshire Senior League Premier Division, despite it still being early days, Collingham are trying a little break, although they’ve played a game more than those beneath them thus far.

Collingham romped to a 7-0 win away to Southwell City to open a three-point advantage, having played five times, with Cotgrave in second place on nine points, and Awsworth Villa leading a host of clubs in joint-third, on seven points apiece, Villa having seen off visitors Beeston 3-0.

Other results in the Premier Division saw narrow wins for Basford CFC and Woodthorpe Park Rangers, 2-1 against West Bridgford IIs and Borrowash Victoria respectively, Radcliffe Olympic edge Gresley Rovers Reserves 1-0 at home, and the game between Aslockton & Orston and Wollaton finished goalless.
