Stags Fightback For Win

Mansfield Town 3-2 Stockport County (EFL League Two) 26.08.23

It’s six unbeaten to start the new season off for Nigel Clough’s Stags after they came from behind to see off visitors Stockport County in a five-goal thriller on Saturday afternoon.

Recent signing Aden Flint was afforded the captain’s armband on what was his 500th career appearance (former clubs include Bristol City, Cardiff City, Swindon Town and Middlesbrough), and George Williams, formerly of Cambridge United, made his Stags debut in what was an entertaining, end-to-end, League Two encounter.

The visitors would be the ones who’d take the lead, as early as the sixth minute, Will Collar finishing a great move through the middle of the park and, his final ball released Louie Barry, who finished well in Christy Pym’s bottom left corner.

Inside fifteen minutes and the Stags were level when, following a cross from the left by Stephen Quinn, George Maris rose to head the ball past visiting shot-stopper, Ben Hinchcliffe, from eight yards out.

Ten minutes later and the visitors restored their one-goal cushion when a corner from Ibou Touray was met, unchallenged in the home box, by the head of Fraser Horsfall, he heading back across Pym, and in at the far post.

Both sides had chances to add more in the first period, Davis Keillor-Dunn seeing an effort bounce off the top of Hinchcliffe’s around the half-hour mark, whilst just before the interval, a rush of blood to Pym’s head nearly saw the visitors extend their lead, Barry however put his effort, with the goal wide open, the wrong side of the post.

Losing 2-1 at the break, Clough left it until the hour mark to make his first change of the afternoon, bringing on Will Swan for debutant, Williams, and shortly after, the Stags were level for the second time when, with twenty remaining, Keillor-Dunn received the ball 18 yards out and his, deflected effort, arrowed past Hinchcliffe.

Then, with ten minutes left on the clock, the Stage led for the first time, with what proved the match-winning goal, Quinn again with the assist, this time for Keillor-Dunn, the attacking midfielder curling home from 16 yards, and inside Hinchcliffe’s far post.

The brace from Keillor-Dunn has taken his tally for the season to five thus far, with Maris joining Louis Reed on two apiece (Rhys Oates and Lucas Akins sit on three each) ahead of the Stags’ trip to Hillsborough on Tuesday (29 August) night, and Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao League Cup Second Round (KO 19:45).

Next month meanwhile begins with a home game against Bradford City this coming Saturday, 2 September, before back-to-back away games.

Stags: Christy Pym, Jordan Bowery, George Williams (Will Swan 62), Aden Flint, Callum Macdonald, George Maris (George Cooper 90), Louis Reed, Davis Keillor-Dunn (Lewis Brunt, 85), Stephen Quinn (Ollie Clarke 85), Lucas Akins, Rhys Oates.
