Promotion Hunting Newark Closing In

Fourth placed Newark Town beat promotion rivals Melton Town on Wednesday night thanks to two goals from Andrew Tsolakis as the United Counties Premier Division North side close in on those above them.

Tsolakis headed home after just two minutes to give the East Notts based visitors to Leicestershire the perfect start ahead of doubling his sides advantage on the half hour.

Melton did reduce the deficit on 42 through Harry Wakefield but a backs to the walls second half performance had Newark cling on for victory, the Blue Submarine did ride their luck as an 88th minute effort from the home side crashed against the crossbar but Newark held on for a vital three points in the promotion race, the club now just six points from top after thirteen games played.

Newark’s victory will have Eastwood Community looking over their shoulders after they were thumped 5-2 at Ashby Ivanhoe on Tuesday. Eastwood are second two points off leaders Lincoln United who play second bottom Kimberley Miners Welfare this weekend.

Kimberley lost against Newark & Sherwood 2-0 on Tuesday night at Harrowby Lane. The Highwaymen now eighth in the table had Kieran Walker and Benni Wilson on target to keep them well within the playoff race.

In Division One there were two games on Tuesday night involving Notts clubs, Clifton All Whites drew a cracking encounter with Dunkirk 3-3 whilst Southwell City beat Stapleford Town 2-0.

In the United Counties League Cup, AFC Mansfield beat Selston 1-0 with a goal from Ryan Ingram whilst Retford United beat Staveley Miners Welfare on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

In the Northern Premier League East Division there was a cracking win for Carlton Town at Grimsby Borough on Wednesday night with Liam Manneh’s eighth minute notch the only goal of the game.

On Tuesday, Sherwood Colliery were beaten 1-0 at Emley, the Colls eleventh in the table whilst Carlton move up to ninth.
