Notts County 5-1 Alfreton Town (FA Cup Round One)
Notts County are through to the second round of the FA Cup after a Friday night win under the lights at Meadow Lane.
A tricky obstacle pending were part-timers Alfreton Town of the National League North and in front of a crowd of over 6,000 it was the away side from Derbyshire who took the lead, a route one goal that started with their keeper Willis clearing to the head of Day which he flicked into the path of Waldock who ran in on fourteen to set up a potential surprising underdog upset.
Notts these days are made of strong stuff though and when Matty Platt hit a deflected effort from long range into the corner of the net on 16, parity was restored and Stuart Maynard’s men never looked back from the half time interval which had the sides deadlocked.
Three minutes after the break Jatta scored from close range after Jevani Brown pulled across goal and on 62 the Gambian striker scored again, his ninth goal of the campaign.
Late on Jevani Brown sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot before the Jamaican international grabbed his second of the game in stoppage time, placing home on the rebound after Kellan Gordon’s shot was parried back into danger.
A good performance by Notts who’ll be relieved to have overcame a potential banana skin, next up for the Magpies a trip to Doncaster in League 2 next Saturday.
Magpies: Bass, Ness (Cundy 81), Bedeau, Platt (McDonald 68), Abbott, Palmer, Hinchy, Gordon, Brown (Muir 90), Jatta (Reynolds 81), Martin (Cisse 68).
