Gallant Reds Exit Cup

Newcastle United 1-0 Nottingham Forest (Women’s FA Cup Round Five) 12.01.21

Nottingham Forest Women have bowed out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup after Jasmine McQuade put the Magpies ahead.

Carly Davies made two changes to the starting 11 that secured Forest their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup, with Natalie Johnson and Bridget Galloway entering the action, as Amy Sims and Katie Dungate resorted to the bench.

The hosts saw Becky Langley make one change to their eleven, with Lois Joel replacing Jasmine McQuade.

Despite both sides equalling the pressure throughout the game, Nottingham Forest started on the forefront, with Melissa Johnson taking the first shot of the game in the seventh minute. Newcastle graced Johnson with a direct run down the right wing, allowing her to aim for the top corner, before Greenwood was able to intercept and head the ball away.

Newcastle were unable to get the game under their control within the first fifteen minutes, allowing the Reds another chance at taking the lead. Millie Chandarana’s initial effort was deflected out wide, triggering a corner kick. Following the set piece, the ball returned to Chandarana, who swiftly slotted the ball through to Charlie Wellings, whose strike narrowly flew over the crossbar.

The Magpies soon regained possession of the ball, and their best chance of the half fell in the 26th minute. Lia Cataldo conducted a perfectly weighted pass through to Amy Andrews, who struck first time, but the ball veered just wide of the near post.

The Magpies were forced into an early substitution minutes before halftime, as Jasmine McQuade entered the action to replace an injured Kelly.

Neither side has managed to break the deadlock, with the score remaining level at halftime despite chances for both teams. Nottingham Forest’s backline has varied their passing but often favours the left wing, targeting Wellings in the final third. Meanwhile, Newcastle has consistently looked to Cataldo on the flank, whose crosses into the box have been aimed at Andrews.

HALF TIME: 0-0

It was a much stronger start for The Magpies, with a pair of last-ditch blocks from Nottingham Forest denying both Katie Barker and Sibley from inside the 18-yard box.

Nottingham Forest continued to pose a threat on the attack when Natalie Johnson crossed the ball into the box, finding Bridget Galloway on the receiving end. Despite a scramble between Moan and Galloway, Chandarana is able to gain possession before tapping the ball wide of the net, unable to capitalise on the chance at hand.

Emily Batty denies Newcastle of an opportunity to take the lead, after Amy Andrews conducts a left-footed inswing towards the goal. Batty is forced from her line, clearing the ball out of play for a Newcastle corner, which does not come to any avail.

Soon after, the Reds should’ve had the first of the game after Claudia Moan lost her footing. Melissa Johnson was able to intercept but was unable to tap the ball home.

With fifteen minutes left on the clock, the deadlock was broken as Jasmine McQuade put the hosts ahead with a stunning long-range strike. Kate Longhurst hooks the ball into the air to clear it from the danger area, but McQuade is able to lock the ball down, guiding it over the line.

In an added time attempt to equalise, Melissa Johnson struck the ball towards the goal, but Moan tipped the ball over the crossbar, ending Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup journey.

Nottingham Forest will now set their sights on maintaining their unbeaten run within the FAWNL Northern Premier Division, as they face Sporting Khalsa on Sunday.
