Brits Impress At Pro Series

British players were on fire over the bank holiday weekend at the Lexus British Pro Series Nottingham, as three of the four trophies on offer were won by home favourites at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre.

In the women’s singles, Amarni Banks won her first ITF World Tennis Tour singles title of the year, and second overall, as she overcame fellow Brit Alice Gillan in one of three all-British finals. After battling through three-set matches in the quarter and semi-finals, Banks faced an opponent in Gillan who had not lost a set since the opening round. After Banks won a tight first set, a dominant second set performance from Gillan took it to a decider, but an early break in the third put Banks in control, and the world number 281 took the title 75 16 62.

After the match, Banks said, “I’ve played in Nottingham a few times and I’ve made quarter finals, semis and even some finals, so to get the win is a really good feeling. I knew I had to play my best game, and luckily today it worked!”

In the men’s final, another all-British showdown saw third seed George Loffhagen and second seed Charles Broom face off. With Broom having not lost a set all week, and Loffhagen having overcome former world No. 17 Bernard Tomic of Australia in the semi-finals, both men came into the match confident. However, on the day it was Loffhagen who took the spoils, dominating the match, including winning seven games in a row, to secure a 62 62 win and his third ITF singles title of the year. Post-match, Loffhagen said, “It was a challenging week, some of the matches weren’t going my way but I managed to find a way through, so I’m really happy with the week and happy to get through today.”

The women’s doubles saw the third of the all-British finals in Nottingham, as number one seeds Naiktha Bains and Holly Hutchinson secured their first title together, overcoming the young duo of Brooke Black and Daniela Piani, just 17 and 18 years old respectively, in a close fought but ultimately comfortable 63 63 win. In the men’s doubles, Charles Broom, in his second final of the weekend, and Ben Jones fell just short of being able to make it a clean sweep of British titles, losing out to the Canadian/American pair of Justin Boulais and Andres Martin 76(4) 62.

Tournament Director Jen Hodgkiss said, “It’s been a great week here at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre. The level of competition was extremely high across the men’s and women’s draws, and it was great for the home crowds to see Brits take home some silverware over the weekend. With more action this week with another men’s and women’s ITF event taking place, we’re sure to see more great tennis on show.”

International tournaments such as the Lexus British Pro Series Nottingham are part of the LTA’s Performance Competitions Calendar (PCC) which provides significantly enhanced opportunities for British players at each age and stage of the performance player pathway on home soil. The calendar is designed to provide comprehensive opportunities for British players to play, earn ranking points and win prize money at home, throughout the year. Another ITF World Tennis Tour event is being hosted at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre this week, with Brits, including both singles winners, back in action.
