Top Notts Flying High

Nottinghamshire recorded their third win in five County Championship Division One games this summer to ensure they stay top of the table by twelve points over second placed Warwickshire, after a thumping win against Hampshire at a sun blessed Trent Bridge.

The tie was wrapped up inside three days on Sunday after Notts bowled out their opponents in just 33.3 overs to cap off a 366 run victory at a cantor.

Notts were made to work in their first innings on Friday as they scored 333 all out, after an afternoon fightback saw Kyle Abbott take a five-for. The home side in-debted to the runs of Freddie McCann who’s 138 topped the day, ironically, having scored 333, Notts had Kyle Verryenne, Lyndon James, and Liam Patterson-White all out for 33. Spooky.

In return, Hants were blasted by Abbas, the Notts debutant Muhammad Abbas actually signed for the club in 2019 but never played due to Covid, his long awaited Outlaws appearance one to remember, he took 5/31 as Hampshire fell to just 196 all out.

That gave Notts chance to charge and after a faltering start, Jack Haynes and Liam Patterson-White combined to both score centuries, Haynes hitting 120 with LPW notching 135 as a seventh wicket stand of 238 was recorded.

Eventually Notts scoring 345 with a lead of 482 looking pretty unassailable for Hampshire to follow.

In return, that predictable outcome despite having a good day and a half of the game still to run, was all over very quickly. This time it was hit man Hutton, along with Lyndon James, who detroyed the top, middle, and bottom of the visiting teams order. Brett Hutton taking 4 for 55 whilst James trumped that, with 5 for just 22. Hampshire ending their second innings on just 116, but at least they got Monday off.

Next for Notts is a trip to Durham on Friday, good news from Trent Bridge is that Ben Duckett has signed a two year extension with the county, although he’s out preparing for England duty as Zimbabwe head to Nottingham next week, for a single test staring 22nd May.
