Dennis Nets For Pies Again

There were mixed fortunes for two of the regions’ professional sides on Saturday afternoon as EFL League Two side, Notts County, picked up another victory to stretch their unbeaten run to four, and slip into the top ten; meanwhile, in EFL League One, Mansfield Town slipped to a third league defeat and find themselves posted in mid-table.

At Meadow Lane, Martin Paterson’s Magpies were thankful for another goal from summer signing, Matthew Dennis, taking his early tally to six in five games, this coming immediately after the restart when Alassana Jatta’s cross into the box from the right found the former MK Dons and Carlisle United hitman unmarked ten yards out, and proceeded to fire the ball into the bottom corner. The goal sealed a 1-0 home win over Fleetwood Town.

The hosts did have chances, numerous throughout, but failed to capitalise on any of them as Paterson’s charges took their recent record to three wins and a draw from their last four outings. It was a win that now sees them sitting level with MK Dons and their opponents, Fleetwood, and just four behind the joint-leaders of Bromley, Swindon Town, and Walsall.

The result would also see a first clean sheet of the season for the Magpies’ Dutch shot-stopper, Kelle Roos, who arrived in the summer from Italian Serie C outfit, Triestina, and who’d prior had spent over a decade on British shores.

Paterson’s Pies are on the road next, travelling to fifth place Gillingham this coming Saturday (13 September).

NOTTS COUNTY – Kelle Roos, Sonny Aljofree, Rod McDonald, Jacob Bedeau, Kellan Gordon, Ollie Norburn, Matthew Palmer, Nick Tsaroulla, Tom Iorpenda (Scott Robertson, 77), Alassana Jatta (Conor Grant, 66), Matthew Dennis (Mai Traore, 77)

Meanwhile, in EFL League One, Nigel Clough’s Mansfield Town slipped to a third league defeat of the season, going down 2-0 when at lowly Wycombe Wanderers.

Home loanee debutants, Sam Bell and Cauley Woodrow (penalty) both registered, with a goal in each half to consign the Stags to defeat; Bell lifting the ball over Liam Roberts after 13 minutes, whilst seven minutes after the restart Woodrow dispatched after Fred Onyedinma was fouled in the box.

The result sees the Stags sitting mid-table, level on points with Bolton Wanderers and Leyton Orient, on ten points, and six points off the joint-leaders of Cardiff City and Doncaster Rovers.

They now host fourth place Stevenage, at the One Call Stadium, this coming Saturday (13 September).
