Sherwood Move Top Of UCL North
Sherwood Colliery disposed United Counties League Premier North side, Boston Town, to take over leadership of the division on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-1 at Debdale Park, and moved a point ahead in the race for the title.
The Wood’s cause is also being helped by the fact that, courtesy of their recent FA Vase run, they also have a minimum of three games in hand on sides beneath them in the table, and boast a healthy, fifteen-point advantage on Kimberley Miners Welfare, who sit sixth, just outside the last playoff place.
Against the now former leaders, Wayne Savage’s title contenders opened the scoring late in the first half through Alexander Duhameau, before Kieran Knight, with his twentieth of a productive season, buried a penalty to double the advantage.
The visitors pulled a goal back through Harry Limb, in the closing minutes, but a fight-back didn’t materialise and the Wood claimed another, valuable three points ahead of a month which will see them play seven times over the next four weeks, including the return fixture at Boston at the end of the month.
Of the other local sides in action, the game between Hucknall Town and Eastwood CFC (1-1 at the time) was abandoned with thirty minutes remaining due to heavy rainfall; AFC Mansfield moved into thirteenth with a 3-1 home win over Ashby Ivanhoe courtesy of goals from Kian Sketchley, Kaylum Mitchell, and Kamani Wilson, whilst Kimberley lost by the same when home to Harrowby United, Sacha Markelic with the consolation.
In Division One, Retford returned to the top following their 1-0 win at FCV Grace Dieu, Retford United’s game was postponed, whilst there was high-scoring clashed elsewhere – Shirebrook Town edged visiting Sleaford Town in a seven-goal thriller, Gedling Miners Welfare won 4-1 at Rainworth Miners Welfare, Clifton All Whites saw off visiting Radford 3-1, and the game between Stapleford Town and Dunkirk finished honours even at 3-3.
The game between Sandiacre Town and Dronfield Town was also abandoned, this at half-time and with the hosts a goal to the good, also due to the weather, whilst on Friday night Southwell City won 2-0 at Clipstone, Akand Gangotra with a brace.
A handful of games were played in the Central Midlands Alliance, Worksop Town Reserves and RHP Sports both picking up victories, against AFC Phoenix (3-2) and Rossington Main Reserves (2-0), whilst Linby Colliery Welfare and Ollerton Town both suffered heavy losses.
Linby were beaten 4-1 away to Mickleover RBL, and Ollerton feel to a 5-1 loss when home to Brodsworth Main; meanwhile, in the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Trophy, Teversal and Selston finally got their game played, it finishing in a 1-1 draw with the hosts progressing 5-4 on penalties.
After a goalless first half, Jordan Black opened the scoring for Selston just after the hour mark, Tevie levelling with seven minutes remaining through Cory Burton; in the shoot-out,
both sides netted their first four each before Kurtis Bamford scored Tevie’s fifth, Ben Moore having his saved by home shot-stopper, Oli Winfield.
Of the handful of games played in the Nottinghamshire Senior League Premier Division, it was a case of three home wins, Beeston seeing off FC Cavaliers 4-2, Dunkirk edging Ruddington Village 3-2, and Bingham winning 2-0 against Collingham.
Meanwhile, at the top end of the pyramid, Worksop Town were held to a goalless draw when away to Scarborough Athletic in the National League North, Carlton Town suffered a rare loss when going down 1-0 at Wellingborough Town in the Northern Premier League Midlands, and Basford United edged hosts Rugby Town 3-2courtesy of Nyle Blake’s late winner in the same.
