Tigers Edge Moors – Weekend Round Up
Lewis Whitham’s goal late in the first half gave Worksop Town a 1-0 win away to Spennymoor Town on Saturday afternoon, and sent the Tigers up to fifteenth in the National League North standings.
It was the visitors’ penultimate away game of the season and, having weathered the early storm form the Moors, nicked the only goal of the game three minutes before the break; Tigers captain, Hamza Bencherif, flicks the ball on to Whitham at the back post, and he slid a right-footed effort past Brad James from close range.
Both sides created chances throughout the second half, Moors coming close to equalising inside the final ten minutes but Corey McKeown’s prodded effort was cleared off the line, before James denied Tigers substitute, Jordan Burrow, a second at the death.
Victory for Craig Parry’s side moved them into fifteenth place, on 54pts, with two games left to play; it was their fifteenth win of the season.
In the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands Anstey Nomads and Carlton Town are neck-and-neck at the top in the race for the title, both registering victories; Nomads won 4-1 away to Boldmere St. Michaels, and Town, a 2-1 success away to Bourne Town courtesy of goals from Khyle Sargent and a stoppage time winner from Oliver Clark.
Basford United also locked in a play-off spot following their 1-1 draw at home to Shepshed Dynamo, Nyle Blake with the goal twelve minutes from time.
In the United Counties League Premier North, it’s the play-offs for both Sherwood Colliery and Newark Town, the former losing out on the title to Boston Town in the final weeks of the season and on Saturday’s final day, Boston hit visiting Hucknall Town for six without reply, whilst Sherwood were held to a 2-2 draw at Blackstones.
Harry Limb bagged a doubled in Boston’s win which saw them win the title by four points, the game between Blackstones and Sherwood meanwhile finished 2-2 with the visitors’ goals coming via Jobe Shaw and Lewis Deavin.
There wasn’t’ much joy elsewhere in the division either, Newark & Sherwood United holding Clay Cross Town to a 1-1 draw, Luke White scoring, whilst there was defeats on the road for both Newark Town, 1-0 at Deeping Rangers, and Kimberley Miners Welfare, 3-1 at Grantham Town.
Retford won the UCL Division One title on Bank Holiday Monday, and celebrated their success with a 6-0 drubbing of visiting Clifton All Whites on Saturday, Liam Bennett’s brace either side of the break adding to goals from Jacob Priestnall, Diego Degirolamo, Iren Wilson, and Rory Coleman.
Division One runners-up Retford United wrapped up their league campaign with a 4-1 win away to Sandiacre Town, their goals coming from Carlton Carty, Ben Ashall, Liam Owen, and Max Pemberton, Wayde Hines with the hosts’ goal.
They’re joined in the play-offs by Stapleford Town, they winning 6-3 at home to South Normanton Athletic to finish fourth, Jack Upton with a hat-trick alongside goals from James Hales, Max Taylor, and Alans Voskresenskis.
Other results saw away wins for Clipstone, 5-0 at West Bridgford (Lewis Weaver hat-trick), and Radford, 2-1 at Rainworth Miners Welfare, Dunkirk and Shirebrook Town finished 1-1, and Gedling Miners Welfare lost 2-1 at home to Staveley Miners Welfare.
The Central Midlands Alliance League would see 2-1 defeats for both Ollerton Town and Teversal in the Premier North, against Rossington Main Reserves and Glapwell respectively, whilst Selston and Linby Colliery Welfare registered goalless draws with Borrowash Victoria and Graham Street Prims.
Cotgrave on the other-hand, they’ve now wrapped up the Nottinghamshire Senior League Premier title, holding an unassailable, twenty-points advantage on second place Awsworth Villa – Cotgrave won 3-1 away to Wollaton whilst Awsworth were beaten 2-1 at home to bottom club FC Cavaliers.
Elsewhere in the division, Aslockton & Orston edged visiting Keyworth United in a seven-goal thriller, Southwell City Reserves won 4-0 away to Beeston, and Notts Olympic won 3-0 at Dunkirk; there was also 2-1 home wins for both Collingham, against Kimberley MW Reserves, and for Woodthorpe Park Rangers, against Bingham Town.
