Young Rowers Raring For Nottingham Event
The National Water Sports Centre, set in Holme Pierrepont Country Park will welcome thousands of young rowers this weekend as a variety of British Rowing Events take place.
Thousands of young rowers will descend on Nottingham this weekend (24-26 April) as the rowing lake at Holme Pierrepont Country Park hosts British Rowing’s national events.
Taking place across the weekend, will be one of regular National Development Camps which bring together rowers from the Performance Development Academies across the country.
British Rowing’s Performance Development Academies form one of the most successful Olympic sport Talent ID programmes in Great Britain, recruiting and developing individuals with no rowing experience (as well as current rowers) into Olympic Champions.
Saturday will play host to the annual Junior Inter-Regional Regatta (JIRR), with competitors aged 14-16 having been selected over the last few months to represent their region at this national-level competition. Event Chair, Luke Dillon said:
“Having the JIRR alongside trials and the pathway event is a fantastic opportunity to bring talent from all over the UK together. It’s great to have different athletes at different stages of their performance journeys all at Nottingham over the weekend.
“Lots of the GB Rowing Team rowers and scullers who are household names now rowed at the JIRR as Juniors. One of the most special parts of the event is thinking about the future of all the athletes who compete, some of whom may go on to row at the highest levels.”
Full details of the JIRR and a provisional schedule can now be found on the British Rowing website. Racing will take place between 08:15 and 18:45.
On Sunday, two competitions will take place in parallel; the Olympic Pathway Development Regatta – which serves as an opportunity for the athletes from the GB Performance Development Academies to experience side-by-side racing on the multi-lane course, and also the GB Rowing Team U19 Trials for rowers looking to gain selection to represent Great Britain on the World stage later this year.
Spectators are welcome (and encouraged!). Admission is free and Holme Pierrepont Country Park has good public transport links and plenty of car parking.
