Notts Held In Southend
It was another two points dropped on Tuesday night as National League leaders Notts County twice let leads slip to be pegged back by their hosts Southend United in an entertaining match at Roots Hall.
The home side are the form team in the division of late and had chances to take the lead before Macaulay Langstaff put Notts ahead on the half hour. The strikers deflected shot nestling home, his eighteenth of the season for the Magpies.
It took Southend less than ten minutes after the break to level when Kensdale’s looping header from a corner pulled things back but just six minutes later, on the hour, Notts were back in front when Cedwyn Scott picked out the bottom corner with a sweet low strike from the edge of the area.
Thereafter Southend knocked at the County door and got a second leveller of the night through Powell on 65 and it could have gone either way late on as both teams looked for a winner.
Notts Head Coach Luke Williams stating after “I didn’t enjoy that one, when we managed to get a hold of the game in the first half it was more enjoyable, and when we scored first, I always felt that we would get stronger as the game goes on, but probably the reverse tonight, the game became more difficult for us the longer it went on”.
The draw leaves Notts still top, on 41 points from 18 played but Wrexham now just two points behind the Magpies have a game in hand. Southend in the playoff zone ending their own run of four consecutive wins, they are unbeaten in ten in the league.
Elsewhere last night, in League Two it was another miserable evening for Mansfield Town who were beaten 2-1 at home against Bradford City.
The Bantams took the lead on the half hour through Richard Smallwood and doubled their advantage on 53 through former Stag Andy Cook.
Matthew Platt was then sent off for the away side for a second booking before Will Swan pulled one back, the Stags defeat leaving them ninth in the table without a win in four in the league.
Better news for Basford United who won their Southern League Central Division match however, they beat Bedford 3-1 with goals from Luther Munakandafa, Tyrese Palmer and Corey Grantham.
The game was actually level going into the final ten minutes with the away side down to ten men, two late strikes sending Basford to seventh in the league just three points outside the playoff places.
Finally Worksop Town were 2-0 winners at Cleethorpes and sit second in the Northern Premier Division East League, six points behind leaders Stockton but with three games in hand, whilst Carlton Town lost 3-1 at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels, the Millers are eighteenth in the twenty team division.
