Mansfield Town’s reward for a wet weekend win in Barrow is an FA Cup second round draw at Hillsborough as the Stags travel to Sheffield Wednesday over the last weekend in November with a chance to reach the lucrative third round stage.
The Stags were stubborn defensively during a down pour in the North West on Saturday and went through thanks to a single Ollie Hawkins goal six minutes before half time of their first round clash.
Barrow had chances but Christy Pym’s goal would not be breached, Mansfield Manager Nigel Clough saying after “We were brilliant in very tough conditions.”
Clough continued “I think we’ve won three times up there in the calendar year which is good going. It took quite a lot out of us (on Saturday) because of the conditions and everything.
“The physical side of the game and the amount of balls they put into the box in the last five-ten minutes I thought we defended heroically.”
Mansfield’s reward for their victory is a short journey up the M1 to League One Sheffield Wednesday, the game scheduled to be played on Saturday 26th November, although it could be moved due to the Friday, Sunday or Monday that weekend for TV arrangements.
Before then, Mansfield will be looking to pick up there form after a recent slump in the league. The Stags host Bradford on Tuesday night before travelling to Rochdale on Saturday.
On the 19th, Mansfield then head to Harrogate before attention draws back to the cup, where they’ll be looking to upset the Wednesday and reach the third round with an even bigger tie to potentially come out of the hat.
