Former Football League President Jack Dunnett sadly passed away aged 97 yesterday after a short battle with illness but he will always be a man that is fondly remembered by Notts County fans as perhaps the ‘greatest ever chairman’ of the club after guiding them from the Fourth Division to the top flight in English football thanks largely to backing his fabulous Manager at the time Jimmy Sirrel.
Dunnett who had other roles from politics to pubs was Director of Brentford Football Club before switching to Notts County in 1969 where he helped transform the club from one in the lower leagues to a side taking on the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool on a level playing field in the early 1980’s.
After retiring in 1987 he was succeeded by Derek Pavis (who also went on to do the club and county proud) as Dunnet concentrated on his presidency of the football league before becoming a member of the Football Associations Executive Committee.
Dunnett was said to have been “a very successful and wealthy businessman, he retained an ability to communicate with the masses and was known for having a tremendous work ethic, was a very driven and focused man”.
