Counties Teams In Cup Action
The second round of the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Cup got underway at the weekend with Awsworth Villa beating fellow NSL rivals Aslockton & Orston 2-0 at the Shilo and tonight we have more action with five games going ahead (weather permitting) this evening.
East Midlands Counties high flyers Dunkirk take on Midland Premier Division Newark Flowserve in arguably the game of the round as both sides are going strong in their respective leagues.
Step 10 outfit Dunkirk have lost just once in the league this season and sit in second behind Hucknall Town level on points but with two games in hand. The Boatmen as they are known beat Collingham 6-1 in the first round and come off the back of a 1-0 win at the weekend against Clipstone and also enjoyed a good cup run in the FA Vase before losing to Worcester City in a match where they gave a great account of themselves eventually losing 3-1.
Dunkirk have attacking threat in Tyrrell Shannon-Lewis and Jordan Alls both in hot form as they look to cause what would be an upset against one of the counties emerging teams in Newark Flowserve.
In their second season at step nine Newark are fourth in a tight division just two points behind the leaders Heather St Johns but with a game in hand.
Flowserve are packed with established local non-league stars and are looking for a fifth straight win in a run of 13 games and one defeat that has included an 8-1 win over Coventry Sphinx, a 9-1 battering of Mansfield Hosiery Mills in the last round of the Notts Senior Cup and a famous 3-0 win against Rugby Town in the FA Vase that set up a local draw against AFC Mansfield in round three.
Newark will include the likes of Ben Hutchinson who has Premier League experience with Middlesbrough whilst the likes of Kyle Dixon & Gregg Smith both had good spells at Boston United in the National League North.
Elsewhere tonight West Bridgford currently 10th in the East Midlands Counties League take on Stapleford Town who are 8th in the Samba NSL at Regatta Way in a 7:30pm kick off.
Stapleford’s last game was on the 25th October and the side have had to endure an agonising wait for matches following three postponements due to bad weather. West Bridgford who’s game at home to Radford on Saturday was also postponed have lost their last two games 2-0 including a defeat against Heanor in the FA Vase.
In NSL v CML match ups previous Senior Cup winners Arnold Town now playing in the Central Midlands League South Division take on Attenborough who lie 14th in the Notts Senior League.
Arnold have struggled in recent seasons and this year has been no exception as they are currently 13th in the division with seven points from nine games.
Attenborough themselves have not had the best start winning just two of their nine league games but they did beat Robin Hood Colts 4-3 in round one to make this stage.
Another NSL v CML tie is at Platt Lane (following a midday pitch inspection) where Keyworth United take on Ashland Rovers.
The greens are seventh in the NSL whilst Ashland are 12th in the Black Dragon South Premier Division.
Finally Calverton Miners Welfare will host their game at Teversal this evening in a tie switched across to North Nottinghamshire with both sides hopeful of making the third round.
