Westwood Wins 25th Tour Title

Worksop born golfer Lee Westwood beat a World Class field to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship by two shots this weekend, a 25th European Tour Title for the 46 year old who has now astonishingly won on the tour in each of the last four different decades.

Westwood, five under for the final day and finishing on -19 under par beat Tommy Fleetwood, Victor Perez and Matthew Fitzpatrick who all tied second and stated “It’s been a good week.” After leading overnight and going into the final round where those below him mounted on the pressure he said “I wasn’t really paying attention to what other people were doing. I was trying to control me, control my emotions and control what I’m working on in the golf swing. Just managed to do that”

Following the win in which he became only the third player in history to win European Tour Events in four different decades Westwood who returns to the World Top 30 rankings now has his heart set on this years Ryder Cup in America as he sets the pace as an early leader for contention in the European team seedings.

Westwood said “It’s only come to the forefront of my mind, now that I’ve got a chance to make the Ryder Cup team”.  He continued “I’ve played ten and I really enjoyed watching everybody else suffer in the last one. Now I have given myself a chance to play”.

Prior to the win in Abu Dhabi Westwood was 63rd in the world but this weekends performance see’s him jump over 30 places and into the mix for the race to Dubai 2020 as well as into contention for a Ryder Cup spot.
