Stags Well Beaten In Carabao Cup

Preston North End 4-0 Mansfield Town (EFL Cup Round One) 29.08.20

Mansfield Town were well beaten by Preston North End in the first round of the Carabao League Cup this afternoon as the Stags crashed out at the first stage of the competition at Deepdale.

An early chance for Maguire as the Preston striker headed straight at Stech in the Stags goal signalled intent from the home side although Cook hit a post on eleven minutes at the other end before the Lillywhites opened the scoring through Barkhuizen.

Preston doubled their advantage on 22 when Maguire struck and on 28 minutes it was 3-0 when Bauer scored.

Sweeney might have reduced the deficit but for heading an O’Keefe free kick over the bar before Harrop forced Stech to save in keeping the score down until half time.

After the break the Stags came out with attacking intent as Cook volleyed over and O’Keefe curled in a testing free kick which was cleared before Stech saved at the other end clawing away a deflected effort.

Five minutes past the hour though Preston made the match all beyond doubt by adding a fourth through Harrop which is how the match would stay, the Championship side showing their quality against League One opponents who were given a tough afternoons test.

Stags: Stech, O’Keeffe, Benning, Menayese, Sweeney, Rawson (O’Driscoll 63), Charsley, Maris, Cook, Perch (Sinclair 63), Rose (Reid 76).
