Beeston Ladies 1st XI are England Hockey Champions after winning the T1 final yesterday against Clifton Robinsons at the Nottingham Hockey Centre.
On a weekend where all the major finals took place in the same place it was Saturday afternoon’s showpiece at Highfields as 2019 holders Clifton took on a Bees side behind closed doors with no spectators in attendance.
In an entertaining game, Bristolians Clifton dominated the early stages with Lily Webb scoring on five minutes before Imogen O’Neill levelled for the Bees before the break.
That goal gave the Nottingham outfit confidence as they came out from the second half with intent to take the lead just five minutes in when Jillian Wolgemuth netted.
As the game ebbed and flowed with both sides having chances it looked to be all over in the final minute when Beeston made it 3-1 thanks to Alice Huddlestone and despite a late consolation from Claire Thomas with seconds remaining it was too little too late for Clifton who surrender their title to the Bees who were brilliant on the day.
A fantastic achievement for Ladies and the first Tier 1 Championship in the clubs history celebrated by all at the home of Beeston hockey and with the potential now of double delight after the men reached the final of their equivalent competition in Greater Manchester.
in the T1 semi-final Beeston eventually won on a penalty shoot out. After a 2-2 draw the Bees beat Bowdon 8-7 in the shootout to reach the final with Fareham winning the other semi final against Southgate to set up an exciting tie.
