Barnsley 1-0 Nottingham Forest (League Cup Round One) 05.09.20
Nottingham Forest are out of the Carabao Cup at the first attempt after a disappointing single goal loss against Barnsley at Oakwell.
An underwhelming first half saw chances few and far between as both sides went in at the break having failed to force either goalkeeper into any real action of note but within minutes of the restart Chaplin forced a good save from Samba who did well diving to his left to keep out the strikers attempt.
That save seemed to matter little though as moments later the home side took the lead when Woodrow scrambled home the opener on 49 minutes after the ball bounced back off a post to him five yards out following good work from Ludewig. A scrappy goal it was that gave Barnsley a deserved lead.
Forest came back at their opponents and from a Carvalho corner Blackett’s header was tipped over by Walton before Woodrow headed over a brilliant opportunity at the other end to double the lead.
The Reds wearing their funky blue and yellow away kit for the first time brought on debutant Lyle Taylor and youngster Alex Mighten before another debut was given for Luke Freeman who replaced Grabban as Barnsley looked to defend their lead and counter the Reds attacking threat.
It was the home side that looked more likely to score though as Frieser broke through to shoot at Samba with fourteen minutes remaining and as the game filtered out it did so without Forest creating a chance of any note.
A poor start to the season in which Forest failed to threaten the Barnsley goal but positive starts for Jordan Gabriel and Tyler Blackett as Fouad Bachirou also got ninety minutes under his belt following his move from Malmo.
Manager Sabri Lamouchi after the game was not happy stating “for me nobody was 100% ready. It’s not good preparation for the start of the season” Lamouchi said “We started well, unfortunately we didn’t create too much. Obviously we are not ready after just three weeks”.
Next up for Forest is Queens Park Rangers on Saturday with a first league game of the season at Loftus Road where improvements will need to be made if the Reds are to start the season with some points.
