Wrens Lose Opener To Sherwood

Rainworth Miners Welfare 0-2 Sherwood Colliery (East Midlands Counties League) 12.09.20

Lewis Belgrave and Kieran Leeds were on target as Sherwood Colliery defeated Rainworth MWFC 2-0 at The Kirklington Road Ground in the opening game of the season.

Two first half goals were enough to secure the victory for the away side as Rainworth battled well in the second half against strong opposition.

The first half began at a fast pace with Sherwood Colliery dominating possession and piling the pressure onto the hosts.

The visitors took an early lead after just three minutes as a free kick routine breached the Wrens defence early. Carter Widdowson took the set piece, drinking the ball into the box to find Keenan Leeds unmarked. Leeds pulled the trigger early, smashing the ball from the left side of the box into the top right corner.

Rainworth came close to finding an equaliser ten minutes later as Aidy Harris’s knockdown sat up nicely for Elliot Jones. The forward took the shot on the half volley which crashed against the crossbar.

Sherwood doubled their lead in the 16th minute having been awarded a questionable penalty which saw Tim Gregory taken down in the box under minimal contact. Kieran Wells stepped up and converted the spot kick with ease into the right side of the goal.

The visitors really should have found a third on the half hour mark. A right sided cross from Gregory found Liam Theakstone in front of goal, however the strikers header somehow skewed wide of the right post.

The second half got off to tame start as clear cut chances became sparse with much of the play spent in the midfield.

The first big chance of the half came in the 69th minute as Kyle Hempshall fouled Kieran Wells on the edge of the box. Carter Widdowson struck the set piece low and powerfully past the bottom right corner.

Three minutes later and the visitors came close again. Sherwood number six Lewis Belgrave slalomed his way through the midfield before striking the post with a shot inside the box.

The rest of the half offered very little in terms of goal mouth action with Sherwood Colliery seeing out a deserved victory.
