Miserable Day In Wales For Stags

Newport County 2-1 Mansfield Town (EFL League Two) 03.10.20

A miserable day for Mansfield in Wales and it was a miserable first half in the rain as both sides contested well enough but lacked spark with the Stags pressing their opponents well without really looking like scoring. Maris forcing a routine save from Townsend on 17 the best on offer for the Stags whilst Aidan Stone at the other end was called into action to brilliantly save Demetriou’s deflected effort.

Haynes and Twine then had half chances for the home side as both shot straight at Stone whilst Maynard fired over on the stroke of half time, the best action of an otherwise poor half of football.

After the break Stone was again busy in the early stages of the second half saving from Cooper before denying Taylor but on 69 minutes Steven McLaughlin struck a fantastic effort from range to give Mansfield the lead most unexpectedly.

That lead didn’t last long however as Newport soon levelled, Twine scoring on 78 and things got worse for the visitors ten minutes later as Menayese handled in the area and Dolan scored from the spot to knock the stuffing out of the Stags and ensure all three points would stay in Wales.

That result takes Newport top whilst Mansfield fall to 21st in the Division. Next up for Graham Coughlan’s men Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy as the Manager now tries to pick up his players who are without a win in five played this season.

Stags: Stone, Menayese, Rawson, Sweeney, O’Keefe, Clarke (Smith 84), Maris, Perch, McLaughlin, Maynard (Bowery 75), Reid.
