Saturday’s Non League Preview

Basford United could close in on league leaders Warrington Town should they beat Stalybridge Celtic on their travels to Greater Manchester tomorrow. Steve Chettle’s team are currently third in the Northern Premier League on thirteen points, three points behind Warrington who visit Lancaster City and on the same points as Matlock Town who’s match with Scarborough has been called off on Saturday due to covid.

Basford beat Stafford Rangers in midweek thanks to a 75th minute goal by defender Stefan Galinski at Greenwich Avenue whilst opponents Stalybridge were beaten by Gainsborough Trinity 3-2 as Celtic currently lie second bottom in 21st place in the table with two points from six games.

In the South East Division Worksop Town will be looking to get back in the playoff picture whilst Carlton Town will be hoping to put pressure on those above them by beating third place Leek at the Bill Stokeld Stadium.

Carlton are twelfth with eight points from seven games and host a Leek side going well having beaten Stocksbridge 6-2 in midweek.

Craig Parry’s Worksop Town team have been enjoying themselves in cup football this season after a run which ended on penalties against Chester City in the FA Cup they beat Ramsbottom United by the same route last weekend in the FA Trophy to reach the next stage of the Buildbase sponsored competition.

In midweek Worksop were held to a scoreless draw at Stamford and this week host Spalding at Sandy Lane knowing a win could potentially take them into the all-important top five.

Going well in the Midland Football League are Newark FC currently fourth with four wins and two draws from their six games played. Last time out Newark beat Coventry United 3-1 with a brace from Danny Meadows sandwiching Romello Nangle’s strike.

Newark host Coventry Sphinx on Saturday a side who beat Selston 7-0 in midweek. The Nottinghamshire villagers currently prop up the table having lost all nine of their league games so far and they host Highgate United on Saturday knowing a win would leapfrog the nineteenth place team above their opponents who are currently in 17th. Selston have just today announced that a new Manager will take control of the club as Assistant Karl Steed replaces Carl Moore in charge.

In the Northern Counties East League AFC Mansfield are without a game for the next week at least after having a number of players and staff test positive for covid. Retford FC currently mid-table of the NCEL First Division travel to Armthorpe Welfare hoping to take all three points against a side six places below them in eighteenth.

Finally in the East Midlands Counties League this weekend some cracking matches weather/virus permitting will take place involving Nottinghamshire clubs.

League leaders Sherwood Colliery are not in action so second place Ollerton Town have the chance to go top as they travel to Eastwood Community currently in seventh. Should Ollerton slip up third place Clifton All Whites will look to take advantage by beating sixth placed Hucknall Town at the Norman Archer Memorial Ground.

Elsewhere in form Rainworth Miners Welfare travel to Belper United whilst Teversal are also in Derbyshire to visit Heanor Town. Kimberley and Dunkirk face each other in an all Notts affair at the Stag whilst Radford host Leicestershire outfit Ingles at Selhurst Street.

Finally West Bridgford welcome Graham St Prims and Clipstone make the short trip across the border to Shirebrook.
