It was double defeat yesterday for our cities elite basketball teams as both Nottingham Wildcats and Nottingham Hoods would be beaten in games aired live through YouTube streams shown on the Nottingham Sport website.
After a winning start to the season a fortnight ago, the Wildcats were well beaten at Leicester Riders 61-48 in an early match on Saturday in front of the cameras at Loughborough University Netball Centre, to lose their second match of the WBBL Cup North Group.
Positives for Nottingham who are now 1-1 in the competition included Jasmine Joyner with 15 points and 18 rebounds whilst Chelsey Shumpert was best of the rest scoring 9 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists but it was Leicester’s day as the Riders (now 2-0 and top of the group) lead from the front to eventually open up an increased margin to take all the points against their biggest rivals.
Much closer was the NBL Division One match between Nottingham Hoods and Loughborough Students Riders which went to the wire as the away side edged our boys to win by just three points.
In a game which the Hoods lead 58-54 going into the fourth quarter it was opportunity missed as the Riders eventually came out on top with a 74-77 win.
Victor Olarerin the bright spark for Nottingham as he scored 20 points whilst Delaney Powell netted 15 of the Hoods scores. Nottingham now 1-1 and standing seventh in the fourteen team table next play Derby Trailblazers at the Wildcats Arena on Saturday but before that is a trio to Loughborough University on Tuesday night for the L Lynch Trophy tie which again will be streamed live via YouTube.
