County Beaten By Boreham Wood

Notts County 0-1 Boreham Wood (National League) 08.12.20

Notts County were surprisingly beaten at home against Boreham Wood in a National League match at Meadow Lane last night with Neal Ardley’s men faltering to defeat having gone into the game in good form and confident of a win.

The Magpies actually started well, Wootton inches away from giving Notts the lead inside two minutes with a towering header from a Jake Reeves cross failing to hit the target.

Two minutes later another missed opportunity as Boldewijn wriggled his way into shooting opportunity from Doyle’s quickly taken free kick only to be denied by Ashmore in the Wood’s goal.

The visitors, having won their last two matches, edged their way back into the game and had the lion’s share of possession in the first half with Thomas hitting the post on 24 minutes the closest to anyone in opening the score.

In the second half Notts had a go at the away side without success, early pressure not leading to much, before a sucker punch on 71 minutes when Fyfield headed home what in the end proved to be the winner.

Late chances came and went as Notts searched desperately for a leveller, Jim O’Brien had a shot deflected wide before appeals went up for hand ball from a corner with the officials having nothing of the County claims. In the final minute Brindley saw his shot blocked and Reeves hit wide from range, the Hertfordshire based opponents clinging on to a memorable win that takes them to fifteenth in the table.

A bad night at the office for Notts who stay third in the table themselves but with leaders Torquay winning, the gap for the only automatic promotion place in the division is now eleven points for the Magpies to attempt to close.
