Basford United 5-0 Rushall Olympic (FA Trophy Round One) 08.12.20
Basford United put in a stunning performance to win 5-0 at home to Rushall Olympic to move into the second round of the FA Trophy.
Ryan Wilson scored the opener on 12 minutes before his corner was headed home by Brad Gascoigne to make it 2-0 at the break.
Marcus Marshall smashed the ball home from close range within four minutes of the restart. Callum Chettle then scored a stunning curling effort via the far post to make it four.
The win was then capped off when Rev James fired home with 20 minutes left on the clock.
After a tense opening ten minutes the game burst into life. Tyler Lyttle forced Kieran Preston into a save with a good effort from range. Straight up the other end Basford took the lead. A corner from the right by Wilson missed everyone and found its way into the back of the net.
Steve Chettle’s side continued on the front foot after that with a succession of corners before Wilson fizzed a low ball across the area that would have provided a certain goal had a team mate got on the end of it, instead it ran away from goal.
Set pieces continued to be Basford’s biggest threat and on 25 minutes they had a second from a corner. Wilson floated the ball into the back post and Gascoigne rose highest to guide the ball into the back of the net.
Rushall did grow into the game but offered very little in terms of end product. Jonathan Letford seized on a loose ball but his pass then gave the ball straight back to Basford as it ran through to Preston. Danile Glover then looked to force the Basford ‘keeper into action but he sliced his effort well wide of the post.
That was the last action of the half as Basford ensured they kept their two-goal cushion at the break.
Within four minutes of the restart Basford had a third. Another corner from Wilson was not cleared and Marshall reacted quickest to smash the ball from six-yards out. Less than 10 minutes later Basford had another goal. After a spell of pressure from Rushall, Callum Chettle capped of a great move with a stunning curling effort from a tight angle.
James was the fifth Basford player to get on the score sheet with 20 minutes left on the clock. The forward did well under pressure from two defenders to take the ball away from Whitehouse and fire into the empty net.
Basford went in search of a sixth as Niall Towle and James were denied late on as Steve Chettle’s side had to settle for the five goals.
