Basford Boys Make History

Basford United U18’s last night produced a historical performance as they beat Grimsby Town to reach the third round of the FA Youth Cup where they will play West Bromwich Albion.

In a tense and tight game at Greenwich Avenue a late Sam Newell rocket on 78 minutes was enough to take United through with the Notts side the last remaining club in the county to still be involved in the competition.

With Mansfield Town losing last night 3-2 at Burton Albion and Notts County losing 3-2 at Wigan on Friday night both in their second round matches, even Nottingham Forest in their third round tie against Bristol City lost (2-1) at the start of the month so that leaves Basford flying the flag for Nottinghamshire in a competition that is famous for producing stars of tomorrow.

Should Basford, who also convincingly knocked out Port Vale in the first round, beat Premier League youth team opponents, their reward will be a home tie against Cardiff City in round four.

Nottingham Sport would like to congratulate the young Basford United team on getting this far and flying the flag with some terrific football and some good old fashioned giant-killing.
