It was London’s day in the WBBL Trophy Final as the BA London Lions Women beat Nottingham Wildcats to deservedly win the cup in a game screened live on Sky Sports which was dominated from the off by the eventual champions who won the trophy for the first ever time.
The Lions who are currently top of the WBBL table started well and never looked back at the University of Worcester Arena and racked up a 28-13 first quarter lead which Nottingham could never overcome. The Wildcats hindered hugely by the loss of one of their star players to injury in Jasmine Joyner who’s match ended after just two minutes played.
An equally dominant second period for London ended the scores 56-26 at the midway interval and although Nottingham fought back in the third to actually win the quarter by two points, a 4pt Q4 in the swing of the Lions ensured it was them, not us, who would take their first piece of silverware for the season with an impressive display on the day.
Notable performances from Nottingham included a match high 27 points from Chelsey Shumpert who’s fine season continues whilst Praise Egharevba topped the teams rebounds with ten (also more than any other player from both sets of players), Tia Freeman topping the Wildcats assists with five, but the day belonged to London who inflicted a second-ever trophy final defeat for Nottingham who are back in WBBL Championship business on Wednesday against Caledonia Pride. Perhaps without Jasmine Joyner too, hoping to bounce back from a painful defeat at the first attempt.
Final score in the WBBL Trophy Final was Nottingham Wildcats 64-96 London Lions, congratulations to London who were magnificent in what was a superb double headed advert for UK basketball and as their men’s team also won the BBL Trophy against Plymouth Raiders later in the afternoon, it really was London’s day.
