Second Defeat For Nottingham

Ampthill 31-15 Nottingham (RFU Championship) 21.03.21

It was another display of lesson and learn as the new look Nottingham team put together over the course of the covid-hit delayed campaign were soundly beaten at Ampthill who provided a dominant second half performance to win easily at Dillingham Park.

Things couldn’t have started much better for the Green and Whites who took the lead from debutant Luke Mehson, a dual signing from Wasps, who raced down the wing to carry home the first try of Nottingham’s season. But even then, against the run of play, the home side had started the better of the two within the opening seven minutes of the match.

Nottingham actually lead 0-10 with a conversion and penalty after 14 minutes, but three minutes later the home side stepped things up and got back to within three points with a converted try and by half time, a second try had the Bedfordshire based side in the lead by four.

The second half saw two further tries for Ampthill, the second conversion missed, and after another went over with the scores at 31-10, it was little too late for Jordan Coughlan who responded late on before a missed conversion settled the scores with a sixteen point margin.

Better than the trouncing at Ealing but still well beaten, Nottingham have a lot to do to get back to the sort of rugby they played last season, Coach Neil Fowkes saying after “I thought we started the game really well and scored a good try through Luke Mehson on his debut after some quick thinking from Ed Coulson. Unfortunately, we failed to capitalise on the time we had on the ball and we made too many unforced errors.

“We couldn’t build any pressure or get any momentum going. They were very good at what they did and they capitalised on the chances they got. They mauled very hard and we kept them at bay but if you give a good team like that too many chances you’re going to struggle.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down and get stuck in to Coventry on Saturday.”
