Bridgford Chasing In Title Race

It’s been a hectic season in the grassroots rugby scene, and for those at West Bridgford it’s one that sees them contesting the title atop the Regional 2 Midlands North division.

With just the four games left to play, there’s still a lot of action to be had, and Bridgy find themselves second to Dronfield by six points, and both have a tough outing in their next this coming weekend.

The leaders welcome third place Walsall, three points further back from Bridgy, who themselves play host to fourth place Melbourne; although the outcomes won’t determine the destination, a negative result for either side will of course pose a psychological score on proceedings.

Bridgy’s season, it all boils down to their last four games, knowing they need to see off Melbourne, Sutton Coldfield (who Dronfield also face), as well as Stoke-on-Trent, and a season finale with a Newark side who, at present, are second bottom.

The division’s top points scorers, with 732 to their name thus far, Bridgy began the campaign, back in early September last year, with back-to-back wins over Newark and Old Saltleians, before suffering a first of four losses, going down 32-15 at Dronfield.

An unbeaten, high-scoring October however kept Bridgy in the early mix, they putting 50+ past Walsall, 60+ past Belgrave, and 70+ past local rivals, Paviors, on successive weekends; the latter seeing an eleven-score try-fest for the hosts, as, with Calum Gunn kicking through eight conversions, Yaw Afirirfah-Mensah grabbed a hat-trick, with a two apiece for both Euan Murray and Jacob Heath.

Dronfield inflicted Bridgy’s second league loss of the season the week before Christmas (26-32), before a 67-14 success at the start of 2026, at home to Belgrave (image courtesy of Constance Towl) started the year off nicely, Afirifah-Mensah with four tries to his name.

Back-to-back losses then followed in late January as Bridgy dropped scores on the road to Walsall, then Paviors, prior to February’s pick-me-ups against Stoke-on-Trent (33-12), Matlock (38-7), and Ilkeston (38-37) in their last outing – now though, it’s time to push for the Regional 2 title.

Elsewhere in the division, Bridgy’s rivals, Paviors, sit mid-table, with seven wins from their seventeen outings, impressing in their last three games with successes over Bridgy (41-28), Old Saltleians (71-0), and Sutton Coldfield (24-7), this after having beginning the campaign with five losses from their opening six games.

The win over Bridgy at the end of January saw Luke Snowden, Daniel Stokes, Daniel Hyams, Christopher Eggleshaw, Owen Taylor, and Matt Molyneux all cross, whilst George Billam added three conversions and a penalty score; as for the shut-out success over Old Saltleians, Pavs racked up ten tries including hat-tricks for both Matt Molyneux and Luke Snowden, as well scores from Douglas Billam, Daniel Stokes, Nicholas Smith, and Kyle Burney, with George Billam adding eight conversions.

Pavs are on the road for three of their last four games, at Newark and Ilkeston before a home clash with leaders Dronfield, then finishing the campaign at Belgrave at the end of March.

Newark is the only other Notts-based outfit in the Regional 2 Midlands North division, and they are sitting eleventh (second bottom) in the table, registering just the four victories from eighteen outings, and two points off bottom club, Belgrave.

Their four successes have seen them defeat Stoke 28-26 in mid-October, Belgrave 30-28 the week before Christmas, as well as Old Saltleians 49-10 and Matlock 21-19 last month, losing their last game when away to Walsall.

Closing out their 2025/26 campaign, Newark have two local affairs, first against visiting Paviors in their next outing, before games against Ilkeston (a) and Sutton Coldfield (h), then a season finale away to title-chasing West Bridgford at the end of the month.
