Saul Deeney – Between The Sticks

Saul Deeney won’t forget his 22nd birthday celebrations in a hurry while with Notts County.

In this week’s Magpie Circle podcast, Saul recalls how his family had all flown over from Ireland to watch him in League Two action against Kidderminster at Meadow Lane in 2005.

A big night out was planned … and Saul was voted man of the match in the game.

Sadly, though, he got sent off in the closing stages after an altercation with a Kidderminster opponent and Notts lost 3-1.

Deeney made over 50 appearances during a five year stint with Notts.

He arrived as a raw 16-year-old from Ireland – one of 13 children.

And a fierce work ethic instilled into him by his family, saw him regularly volunteer for more apprentice jobs around the ground with the senior squad to earn more money.

Deeney continues to live in Nottingham and now works for the club’s Foundation programme as a youth coach and mentor. He still plays for Coalville Town.
