Nottingham Wildcats wrapped up their WBBL regular season with a win against Oaklands Wolves in the final game yesterday afternoon, but it wasn’t pretty, in a low scoring contest, Kenrick Liburd’s side came from behind to eventually win the match by eight points.
The visitors to Oaklands College in Hertfordshire were behind 26-22 in the first quarter but a strong second gave Nottingham the half time edge with a two-point lead 33-35 to the away team at the break.
Wolves edged back level in a third period that went 11-9 to the home team but Nottingham scrapped to victory in a fourth quarter where the hosts could only score four points, the Wildcats with 12 to eventually run away by 56-48 in what was otherwise a tight game of basketball on the night.
Simone Costa and Moa Lundqvist top scored for the Wildcats with 14 each whilst Moa also claimed an impressive 12 rebounds with three assists each for Chelsey Shumpert, Costa and Rebecca Dwomoh.
The win means that Nottingham finish in a credible fourth place in the Championship after what was a tough stop/start campaign hit by covid with the Wildcats winning 11 and losing 9 of their twenty matches in a table topped by Sevenoaks Suns.
With the Playoffs now approaching this weekend, attention draws to a Quarter Final tie against Manchester Met Mystics who the Wildcats have already beaten four times this season. In a packed weekend already titled ‘May Madness’ the two teams will meet on Sunday at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle with a place in the final four at stake.
