Nottinghamshire Cricket Club allowed supporters through their gates yesterday to enjoy for the first time in two summers, County Cricket at Trent Bridge, but with just 15.5 overs played of day one of their sixth Group One game of the season, it wasn’t really an occasion to celebrate for those long returning fans as the rain dampened down proceedings to Notts verses Worcestershire.
With today and the weekend predicted to be just as miserable it looks all on the cards that this match will end in a draw but in the fifteen overs of play at Trent Bridge where Worcestershire winning the toss, elected to bowl yesterday, Notts struggled to 51/3 with early wickets for Slater (15) & Hameed (24) before Joe Clarke went for a duck.
With no play since the second session of day one prior to tea, it feels the good old English weather has again beaten the game of cricket and the return to those wanting to witness some long awaited play will have to wait a while longer, but better news for football fans as this weekend Notts County men and women (amongst others) welcome back supporters for the first time since covid lockdown has been forced upon them and us all.
Notts men play Weymouth in the National League tomorrow at Meadow Lane knowing a win will secure their status in this seasons playoffs, a sell out crowd is expected, all be it slightly smaller than usual with a small percentage of the stadiums capacity allowed to be in use due to government covid measures, no tickets left available but the lucky few will at least get to cheer on their boys as they hope to cross over the line a week ahead of schedule.
Elsewhere the Notts County women’s team will be in action with supporters in attendance for the first time at Greenwich Avenue, Basford this year, they face Leicester City Ladies on Sunday with a 2pm kick off – free entry to all with bar and kitchen open on the day.
Basford United will play a day earlier at the same venue, tomorrow on Saturday with a 3pm kick off scheduled for a friendly cup competition against Mickleover FC. Entrance to the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Friendly Cup match will cost up to £7 for adults with a small percentage of gate entrance going towards charity.
It might be a wet one, but at long last, fans can finally attend the cities top ‘outdoor’ venues to watch their favourite teams play. Just remember this weekend if you do go out and watch sport, take your coats and umbrella and don’t forget your masks. If you have any covid symptoms please do the right thing, and stay at home.
